Sun Dolphin Pro 102 Review

The Sun Dolphin pro 102 fishing boat (cream/brown 10.2 feet) is feature-packed and ready-to-go from driveway to truck bed to river or lake’s edge. Like most high-quality KL industries fishing boats, the Pro 10.2-foot is built from a thermoformed high-density polyethylene material that’s designed to stand up to the toughest of in-water and on-deck impacts.

The boat is as lightweight as small boat gets and allows for manual steerage or power from a low electric trolling motor or Low-HP outboard, both of which must be bought separately.

Featured on the deck is an aerated livewell with a fine drainage system for mounting rear outboard or front trolling motors. At 55-inches wide, the boat is compact enough to be strapped into the bed of a pickup, making it simpler than ever to get into the water and on your way to fishing.

The deck and full hull come with a 2 year warranty against defects and the entire boat meets CE, USCG, and NMMA safety ratings.

  • Boat pre-wired for rear and front motor attachment
  • Features livewell for fresh catch with aerator pump and drainage system
  • Full-navigation lights allow for visibility and safety in low-light fishing

My Experience

For a while now, I owned a Pelican Scorpio and required an upgrade. I discovered a Sun Dolphin Pro 102 for sale and I couldn’t find anything better for the price.

The packaging comes on a huge pallet and in a bag so it’s great. I noticed some features a lot of blogs didn’t write about like a bow light (red a and green) and a tall 5’white stern light – and so I was prompted to write my own Sun Dolphin Pro 102 fishing boat reviews.

They just plug in and if the battery is hooked up, they turn on. It also has 3 spots for rod holders, and 2 foam horizontal rod holders by the side. It’s way faster than my old boat and turns on a dime. I use a 7.5 HP Johnson but the rating says 7 HP max.

With two people aboard, it moves just fine. When I charge full throttle a little water kicks up in front, so I back off a little. I put it in my F150 (6′ bed) and use an electric winch and Pressure treated board with some outdoor/indoor carpet on it to get it in, works great.

Getting it on water couldn’t get any easier, back it in and push it out. It’s made well, better than the Pelican was and has the same 2 hull design. Some water accumulating in-between hulls is completely normal.

The seats are well made and replaceable, with a bronze bushing the seats fit in and out of so you need not add grease. I replaced mine with thicker brass. You cannot lean with the seats given though, just turn.

The storage is great because of it organization. I use the aerator  (it has an on/off switch)as a cooler sometimes (it drains too). There are no oar holes in the sides, but it came with a nice battery box. I can mount the trolling motor on the front and just plug it in through a port in the hull (the wiring is through the hulls).

There is also one in the back by the transom. I use a 50lbs trust that moves it fine, but in the front, reverse is forward and forward is reverse. Generally, its an awesome little boat and allows for modifications a bit (thinking of making a canopy that sticks into the rod holders, like tents have) and it moves great in the water.

It’s simple to handle with the right tools, I advise the cover, an electric winch (cheap one) a ramp, and boat dolly. No trailer saves way more money and aggravation, than all the accessories, and storage is much easier, I kept the pallet it came with and store it on that under my deck all covered up.

Pros

This is great as a 2 person fishing boat.

it is prewired has front and bow lights

A live-well and only weighs 163 pounds fits right into the back of my pick-up truck

It is very stable and comfortable

Allows motor installatipon

Easy to get into and easy to keep clean

Cons

Nice boat, but the it requires paperwork in Texas and Chicago. The paperwork will not get you a registration from the registry, you need a bill of sale in such states.

The battery for the trolling motor is heavy

Conclusion

And with that, we’ve come to a concluding end of our Sun Depth Pro 102 review. If buying this unit new beats your budget you can check for Sun Dolphin Pro 102 for sale used on Craigslist or other online forums.

The Water Quest 10.2 is capable, tough, and comes loaded with unique features. These boats can quickly go from the river’s bed into the river with no hassle at all. It is constructed from thermoformed high density Polyethylene that makes it super impact resistant and simple to care for. Need I ask that it is light enough to be powered by a small outboard or just an electric trolling motor.
